Energy Exploitation of Non-Recyclable Urban Waste in an Sustainable waste to Energy Market ENERGY WASTE
The proposed project proposes a scheme that achieves almost total recycling of MSW and its non-recyclable by-product. In this way, one of the more crucial problems, actually the sustainable “disposal” of difficult side products of the entire recycling industry is achieved in a sustainable way. Taking into consideration the high biogenic fraction of these by-products (more than 65%), it is further concluded that important EC goals (such as the increased penetration of RES in Europe’s energy balance) are well served. The main results of the proposed project include:
Considering the above, the proposed concept is also expected to lead to high replication potential of this approach throughout Greece and Europe.- Energy exploitation of non-recyclable waste fraction through an effective logistics management scheme that will be implemented by EPANA with the technical assistance of CERTH/ISFTA.
- Design and implementation of a gasification unit of SRF for electricity generation. The unit is considered as renewable energy source and will be tested over a long period of time.
- Demonstration of the environmental benefits of waste energy exploitation through the quantification of CO2 emissions avoided from the exploitation of the non-recyclable fraction.
- Study of the gasification project sustainability in order to promote the proposed approach, maximise the environmental benefits, and guarantee the continuation of the scheme after the project execution.
